WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE. Andrea Cortonesi

THE OWNER

"l became a farmer by deliberate personal choice. Although I come from an agricultural family, I could have chosen a different path--until, in 1986, I purchased the Uccelliera farm. I was in time to catch only the last, setting rays of the "old-styIe" farming, when one still heard little of Brunello. Then everything changed. But I nevertheless learned that world's essential theme: love for the earth of which we respectfully ask its fruits for our life. When I began to work the land that was now mine, I realised that I was perhaps seeking to live a relationship with this earth that went beyond simple business principles."

"l look at my farm, and think of what it has witnessed over the centuries: at least seven are documented, and the others one has to imagine. Then I arrive; and how can I believe that everything begins today just because I produce Brunello? Thus it is right that the original name becomes the name of today's wine estate, that I preserve the original architecture, which will soon be that of the new administration buildings. And next to the residence I have left a half-hectare olive grove, which might seem odd, seeing that the plot would be more valuable in grapes. But the land has its way of reminding one that to ask too much of it is to somehow lower the quality of one's life. Just being able to dine outdoors of an evening, by this olive grove, gazing out over the vines, without necessarily thinking of the needs of the vineyard, is a precious thing."

"Whatever I am creating that is new will have roots as deep as my olive trees, almost a millennium old. I found an ancient farm, almost a ruin, a land that had always been fertile, a landscape familiar to the many generations who preceded he here; I want my labour to enrich this heritage, and I shall be able to say that I have preserved it as a living thing for the future."

"My farm is beautiful. Not because it resembles some picture postcard, but because it is pervaded by human history and by nature's process. The ancient quarries that yielded the alabaster for the Abbey of Sant'Antimo border my vineyard. History doesn't influence the land, true, but it does the behaviour of those who work it. It inculcates respect and the will to continue fonlvard."

"l want to plant a garden around the estate, next to the olive grove. I see it as a mixture of vegetables and flowers, of the useful and the beautiful. They say that gardens were precisely that in the olden days, but for me it is simply the way to farm today.“

"Farming today requires considerable individual dedication, but that does not mean that it can be seen as a vocation to solitary labour. Growth must be collective, since if my neighbour makes mistakes, I will suffer the consequences, and vice versa. This is the reason I dedicate time to mutual agricultural concerns, to meetings, to the study of all those things that, apart from work in the fields, are part of our world. Our work has serious meaning for all of our society, so it bears doing with conscientiousness and responsibility."

THE HISTORY

In Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where my family verwurzelt is and always with the work on the country and was connected for the village, I could acquire at the end of of 1986 a farmhouse with property and continue with it this tradition. The natural suitability of this soil for the cultivation of wine and olivenbaeumen as well as my business spirit me difficult moments helped to overcome. The acquisition I began right after to make important changes in order to transform the possession into predominantly the viticulture dedicated an agriculture enterprise. I maintained the original name "Uccelliera" (bird house). Although the emphasis of the yard should be the viticulture, the olivenbaeume, which framed the farmhouse, stand calmly from respect for these several hundred years old plants. Growing and prospering the yard led to an expansion of the viticulture. Under careful retaining of the characteristic characteristics of building and environment the property house was reconditioned. In order to become fair the need according to the new functional premises for the wine preparing, development and storage to change the existing buildings made a cellar under without the characteristic of the place.

The direction of the rows, the constant and attentive manual care of the vineyard to maintain a balanced growth and a regular thinning of the bunches contribute to the production of grapes that are perfectly ripe, healty and fragrant all essential requirements for a balanced wine rich in structure, suitable for brief and long ageing.

THE VINERY

The original, old wine cellar now a new building follows, whose dimensions permit an optimal working, in order to achieve a ever better quality. The guiding principle selected with the construction work was an adequate evaluation of the place, the preservation of the landscape and continuity when tying to the tradition of the old yard.

The wine cellars underground put on, both the old and the new, make the fermentation of the wine and its maturing possible in holzfaessern and in bottles at natural and constant temperatures during the whole period away. The selection of the grapes met during the harvest separates those, which are intended for the production of the Brunello di Montalcino and/or the Rosso di Montalcino. They originate from wine gardens, which were pulled and maintained duringthe whole vegetation time for exactly this purpose.
